Cycle Loft’s been around since 1976, when the first Cycle Loft was in nearby Lexington Center, on Muzzey Street. Any guesses how it got the name? Well, it’s pretty simple, the first Cycle Loft was much, much smaller than our present building–it was on the second floor of a small building–anytime you wanted to bring your bike upstairs for service, you just gave a holler and someone would come down and help out. That’s how it all got started. For a couple years, there actually were two Cycle Lofts–the one in Lexington, and where we are now, here in Burlington. Then, when the business kept growing, Burlington became the single location. The building we just vacated was built in 1997 and served us well for 20 years; our newest location is even better and will serve everyone to an even greater extent!
While working as a sport scientist and coach for a professional cycling team, Dr. Allen Lim started making his own training food and sports drinks from scratch for the cyclists because too many of the pre-packaged sports bars and drinks that were marketed or given to them were laden with artificial ingredients and literally making them sick to their stomach.
Soon, word of the “Secret Drink Mix” was spreading fast and it was clear that the demand for our all natural drink mixes extended far beyond cyclists or endurance athletes. Race car drivers, rock climbers, concerned parents, Peace Corps workers, and normal active people looking for healthy food and drink alternatives were buying the product and hungry for more knowledge and ideas.

Since 1977 we have been actively involved I the research and development of ventilation and moisture dispersal properties for different fabrics. The fruit of these efforts is the Craft Principle, our way of providing functional training and competition wear that ensures the best body micro-climate (the temperature and moisture conditions closest to the body) for optimal performance.
An intensive training session will result in the body producing a considerable amount of sweat. This is just how it should be and a confirmation that you are pushing your limits. If you are not wearing functional clothes, the sweat will remain in place and block the pores, causing your body heat to rise. Eventually, the clothes will turn into a damp, cold and heavy “envelop”, relentlessly hampering your performance.
The story of UnTapped began both on a bike and a pair of skis. UnTapped Maple founders, professional cyclist Ted King and the Cochran family of professional alpine skiers, naturally gravitated to the organic simplicity of maple syrup. Not for any gimmick or flashy advertising, not because of the work chemists were doing to alter something that is already just right, but simply because maple syrup truly worked for their energy needs. With their collective understanding of the natural, viable energy of maple syrup, they started UnTapped in late 2013.
Pure maple syrup is produced simply by removing water from maple sap, leaving behind the liquid gold that we know and love. This lack of heavy processing leaves a multitude of benefits in the syrup that one finds lacking from other sweeteners and gels. Which is precisely why those gels are artificially sweetened, flavored, and supplemented, whereas UnTapped remains pure.
Three years on, Cycle-Smart isn’t just a part of me, but has made me a part of it, taking on a life of it’s own, and defining itself along the way. At the start, Cycle-Smart began simply as a way to try and turn all the activities I was involved in on a volunteer basis into something I could do for a living: coaching riders, organizing and promoting races, and managing teams. As I came to the end of the period I spent racing my bike as my sole source of income, I wanted to find a way to give that time and the experience I had acquired more value and importance. I had always done that through volunteerism, but I felt that now I had an opportunity to dedicate myself to those things full time and improve the quality of the work I did.
In pursuing that end, Cycle-Smart has filled many roles. It’s become a business, yes, but business is perhaps the least important part of the whole. Cycle-Smart has become a community, a congregation, and a collective, depending on a large group of people sharing an experience. It’s a place to exchange ideas and to build things. It’s a creative outlet, it’s therapy, insanity, activism, and social construction. Most of the time, it leaves me with more questions than answers.
